DOCENTS AND TOUR GUIDES
A docent program was started in the fall of 1998 in order to have
knowledgeable people available to assist the many visitors that come to the
National Shrine. Docents are in the church six days a week except during
services. Appointments can be made for tours for large groups. To find out
more about being a docent and tour guide, or to arrange a tour, contact Diane
Stock at 248.541.4122, ext. 414.
Jean, Beverly and Kathy have been giving tours of the National Shrine of
the Little Flower since the summer of 1981. Much reading, research and
interviewing was done in the preparation of the tour. The first tour in June of
that year drew only 10 people, but the second, in July, garnered a crowd of
61! Word-of-mouth must have been favorable.
While the tours were planned primarily for parish members, people from
other states and countries are often discovered in attendance. Busloads of
Senior Citizens and groups of cub scouts arrive periodically.
Jean, Beverly and Kathy have corresponded with Beatrice Wilczinski, who
did the painting in our church, and met Corrado Parclucci, who designed
the bronze and stone trim. They have interviewed friends of Fr. Coughlin
and men who worked on the building itself.
