Fr. Pro was a modern-day martyr, beatified in 1988 by Pope John Paul II. The bronze plaque in the vestibule of Doorway No. 5, off of 12 Mile Road, is in his honor. During the 1920s he was a priest in Mexico. The Communists in control ordered him to stop preaching and stop wearing his priestly clothing. He gave up his robes, but he continued to preach in civilian clothes and bring the sacraments to his flock. He was captured and condemned to death by firing squad as depicted by this plaque.
Notice the detail in this bronze relief. He is holding a crucifix and a rosary in his hands and is saying, “Viva Christo Rey” — Long Live Christ the King — while soldiers are shooting bullets and the photographers are shooting pictures. This tragedy took place in 1929.Fr. Coughlin had met Blessed Miguel Pro about two years earlier.
