This ministry assists the priest in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. EMHCs also take the Eucharist to the homebound, as well as those in assisted living or who are ill in a hospital. For more information, call Paula Dixon, Pastoral Associate at (248) 541-4122 Ext. 411.
Lectors read the first and second readings during Mass. Specific training is required for both adults and students, usually completed in one session.
Lector training includes public speaking techniques of diaphragmatic breathing, articulation and diction, microphone usage, inflections, pausing, pacing, and other techniques. Attendees learn important practice tips and oral muscular exercises to further ready them for this important ministry. Training also includes the mechanics of lectoring at Shrine, carrying in the Word during the procession, approaching and retreating from the altar, and when to bow.
Interested adults should contact Lisa Pickering at [email protected]. Interested students in grades 7-12 should contact Janie Lynch at [email protected].
Ministers of Hospitality, or Ushers, serve the parish by collecting donations during Mass, seating parishioners, handing out the bulletin, and maintaining the order and security of services as an important gift of hospitality during weekend Masses, Holy Days, and other special services.
Ministers must be at least 13 years old and a registered member of the parish.

Altar Servers are individuals who minister to the parish through assisting the priest during Mass, weddings, funerals, and special events. Most altar servers are youth, and training is held several times a year for both boys and girls grades 4 and up. Altar serving is open to any youth, not just Shrine Catholic Schools students.
Adult altar servers are also welcome to participate in this ministry and generally consist of senior men who enjoy the opportunity to assist at Mass.
